East Coast Soul Wedding Performance at Bedford Golf and Tennis Club

Empire State Soul was invited to perform at the Bedford Golf and Tennis Club in Bedford, NY for the beautiful wedding of Nick and Lily in June of 2015. This was our first time working a Bedford Golf and Tennis Club wedding as an Upstate New York Wedding Band. We are always excited to work with a new venue. It was even better because of the beautiful location and wonderful time of year. We’ve been hearing amazing things about the Bedford Golf and Tennis Club for some time, so then opportunity to work there was more than welcome. The staff proved warm, welcoming, and helpful and made our time there a true pleasure.

Once the big day arrived, Empire State Soul traveled to Bedford NY and began our long process of loading in to the venue. The trip to the venue involved some of our members traveling in from Boston, and others from New York for the big day. Regardless of their origin, the band always enjoys an opportunity to get out of the cities where they live and work. We were lucky to be joined by our trusty sound tech, Michael, who makes the load in and soundcheck process as easy as can be. Soundcheck is one of the most important elements of our preparation process. Every room we perform in is very different, acoustically speaking. Without sound-checking, what could have sounded good in another room can sound totally horrible in another.

Part of our planning process involves outlining exactly what portions of the wedding East Coast Soul will be involved with. Also, as is often the case, Empire State Soul was also asked to provide cocktail hour music. Because of the layout of the Bedford Golf and Tennis Club, we recommended what has become our most popular cocktail hour option, our jazz duo of guitar and saxophone. Their cocktail hour was held in a slightly different area than the main reception. As musicians who love jazz, we always appreciate the opportunity to set a classy mood for any reception. Our musicians blazed through an hour set of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and more. When that was finished, the wedding was ready to move to the reception portion of the evening.

In a majority of weddings, East Coast Soul is asked to provide MC services for the program portions of the evening, and this wedding was no different. With introductions complete, we moved immediately into the couple’s first dance. This is almost always one of the most meaningful parts of the evening. It's a chance for the couple to take a moment for themselves. With this portion of the evening complete, the guests and vendors took a break for dinner. After resting briefly, East Coast Soul returned and delivered a performance.

In many weddings, we are also asked to perform the couple's parent dances. This is a chance for the bride and groom to spend a couple minutes on the dance floor with their father and mother, respectively. In this case, the groom and his mother danced to Stand By Me, by Ben E. King. Parent dances are a great way to start the performance portion of the evening. We generally ask for the attention of the guests to start. We then often ask them to join the couple and their parents on the dance floor, and then move directly in to the rest of the performance.

Our performances often start with older material. We've found this is a great way to get folks up on the dance floor with songs they're familiar with. Artists like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye dominated the beginning of our set list. We then moved into performing music by artists like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Finally, we ended the night performing contemporary material that everyone could sing along with. Guests danced non-stop from beginning to end, and we limited our breaks to ensure people had as much time to dance as possible. Thanks so much to Nick and Kily for having us at their beautiful June wedding at the Bedford Golf and Tennis Club. We wish them all the best!
